A butler for your mansion in Europe

A butler is a senior servant, who is in charge of housekeeping on the whole. In large estates, where housekeeping may be distributed among several persons, a butler is responsible for the dining room, wine cellar and butler’s pantry.

This person may also be fully responsible for the front part of the house, whereas the other household activities are within the competence of the household retainer (lady-housekeeper). The butler, who is normally male, manages male service staff, while the household retainer, who is most often female, manages the female service staff, respectively.

In modern houses butler’s duties may vary greatly depending on the employer’s requirements.
